Tips For Buying Window Air Conditioners
There are many reasons why folks purchase window air conditioners. For instance, there are times when it might be necessary to only cool a small room, small adjoining rooms, an office, or even a garage. Many people can even cool a very small apartment with one air conditioning unit. The units can be very energy efficient. Using this type of air conditioner can also save on energy costs when you do not wish to cool the entire house.
Purchasing a window air condition is relatively simple, however there are a few things to consider when deciding which kind to choose. You will want to have an idea of what you expect from a window air conditioner, which will help you decide which type to invest in. How large of an area you will be cooling is also important to choosing the unit with the correct BTU, or British Thermal Unit.
You will want to start by measuring the room you intend to cool. Make sure that your measurements are in square feet since this is the most common way to provide measurements. Next you will look for an air conditioner that has the appropriate BTU for the size room you will be cooling. The unit must have the appropriate BTU or it will not work efficiently to cool the room.
The amount of heat that you want to take from the room with the air conditioner will be relative to the BTU. British Thermal Unit is a measurement of energy. When an air conditioner has the correct BTU, there will be a reduction in the amount of energy that is wasted.
Check the BTU calculation of your room. As a reference, 5000 BTUs is best for a room that is one hundred fifty square feet. Take the correct measurements of the window that the air conditioner will be placed in. Double check your measurements to make certain that the appropriate size air conditioner is purchased.
Since the EER, or energy efficient rating, is important to the efficiency of the unit, make sure to check for it before you buy. A room that is likely to be warm will require a unit that has a higher rating in order to save on energy.
Purchasing a unit with a thermostat will cool more efficiently and will save you money. When the temperature in the room reaches the ideal setting, the thermostat adjusts the unit to maintain the setting. Additionally, a thermostat that has a timer also has remote control which turns the wall unit off or on when the room reaches and stays at a specific temperature. The units that have thermostats are also very cost efficient.
It is also a good idea to invest in a replacement filter when you purchase window air conditioners. Part of keeping the unit working well involves changing the filter when it is needed. Remember that a good unit may cost a bit more. Buying a cheap unit may save money initially, but in the long run it can cost more if it is not able to continue to cool the room and needs to be replaced.

How do i make my room air conditioner colder?
2 weeks ago i bought a 6300 BTU room air conditioner for my room, my room isnt very big i can fit 2 queen side beds in it and thatd be pushing it.
I set the temperature to 64 degrees, but i notice that the AC never goes under 74 degrees.
How do i make it go down to 64? is there something im missing?
I have everything to the coldest settings and it wont go under 74 F....
There is some accordion vents that are not sealed properly on the side, could this have to do with it?
Yes, the accordion side seals must be sealed, plus the accordion could use some kind of insulation. Perhaps use some white cardboard, used on the outside so it doesn't look trashy, custom cut and fitted tight.
Another aspect of having the big room is if there are doors that are not closed leading into the room.... Perhaps place a small fan in the corner, on the floor, pointed to the ceiling. -that will get the convected air circulated so the unit can cool it.
The most important thing is having the unit CLEAN inside; if it is not clean, it will not do its job. DO remember to keep the return air filter CLEAN. If the backside of those coils get cruddy, its only a matter of time until the unit will no longer work. You wouldn't believe how many window units I've picked up from in front of people's houses that are perfectly fine, badly in need of a thorough cleaning.
Also, if your unit has too much tilt, all the condensation will run out. That is actually bad because the condensation forms, then is held in a small "well" in the bottom of the unit. The internal fan has what's called a sling ring to pick up that water & throw it on the condenser..... The unit has a designed drain for any surplus condensate.
