BMW Service and History
Few know that BMW began life as an aeroplane engine producing company. It is maintained that the BMW trademark, or roundel indicates the movement of a propeller, using the colours of the Bavarian flag. At the end of WWI, the Versailles Armistice Bargain forced BMW to cease production on aircraft producing. From there, they made a natural transition into motorsports, beginning with bikes in 1923 followed by vehicles in 1928. However , during WWII, BMW did produce aircraft engines once again, this time for the Luftwaffe or German air force. BMW has become associated with driving performance, and their models continue to lead their respective segments in nearly every performance aspect. From the fire respiring M3 to the refined 750Li, it is awfully obvious the future automobiles from BMW will not disenchant.
The engine in every BMW is really the guts of the automobile. Bred as the "Ultimate Driving Machine", these power plants are bred from legendary racing engines like the E30 M3's four cylinder or the BMW straight six. With the making of BMW's "M" division ("M" for motorsport), the automaker's credibility has only increased. First established in the 1972 with only 8 employees, the "M" division was simply there to aid in BMW's racing programme; making new cutting edge concepts and products to help the company win. But the "M" division shortly started playing with production cars and offering higher trim versions of current models. The first M badged BMW available to the public was the M1 in 1978. Today BMW offers an M version of nearly every model, excluding the X3 and 7 Series, delivering a high performance, track ready package to the market that few others can come close to matching.
Air conditioning systems in any car are very difficult. Heat inside the cabin of the vehicle flows into the evaporator, where it contacts cold metal louvers. Refrigerant carries heat from the evaporator into the compressor and to the condenser, where it is chilled and water vapour is removed. The refrigerant soaks up all of the heat from the compressor, cooling the compressor. A fan then blows the cool air from the compressor into the cabin. All BMWs made after 1993 use R134a refrigerant, which is free of ozone-depleting Freon. You might find that if your 1992 or older BMW has an aircon issue that it could be best to change it from R12 (Freon based) to R134a.
BMW is constantly searching for and implementing new technology to steadily improve their vehicles. Their transmissions are no exception, and BMW has made exciting advances during the past decades pushing their technology to the edge. Most lately seen is BMWs use of a dual clutch transmission available on the M3, Z4, 335is and 135i. This transmission is basically like 2 separate manual transmissions, one for even gears and one for odd gears, with 2 separate clutches contained in one cohesive unit. These transmissions permit the driver to either choose a gear in an automated manual mode, or simply permit the transmission to shift as a full automated. A twin clutch transmission gets shot of a traditional torque converter, which didn't allow the driver to select a gear.
BMW has long considered each part of the car as a complete entire. Many individuals only fret about what the car's acceleration time is, not even thinking about braking performance. Braking performance is one of the most vital sides of a car, and BMW has treated it as such. They have implemented 3 braking features that keep their autos at the front of each braking test: brake standby, brake fade compensation and brake drying. Brake standby implements a sensor in the gas pedal which senses when you remove your foot quick as though in a panic. It then brings the brake pads closer to the rotors in anticipation of a hard stop, therefore reducing stopping distances. Brake fade compensation recognizes when the rotors are overheated and increased effort is needed to press the pedal. It then mechanically increases the brake boost so you don't experience the "mushy" feeling of fading brakes. Brake drying uses the rain sensors in the rotors to recognise rain, and then moves the pads nearer to the rotors so that the heat vaporizes wetness on the rotors, decreasing stopping distances.
BMWs come outfitted with high-performance radiators that are overqualified for most jobs. Rich in racing history, engine cooling is highly. Vital to BMW and is not treated lightly in their production autos. A radiator works by transferring thermal energy by employing air and a liquid coolant. The coolant flows thru the engine block, soaking up heat from the engine and passing back through the hoses into the radiator. From there, it is chilled by passing thru the veins in the radiator core, which is exposed to the outside air. Although the mpg gains are insignificant, it is a step in the right direction as the automaker moves towards a greener future. More models are scheduled to be added in the approaching years with more of the focus on fuel usage.
