Find Out How Unusual Scholarships Can Help You Fund Your College Degree
Did you know there are special scholarships for left handed people, for red heads, for tall people etc. Weird as it might sound, there are actually several unusual scholarships available and plenty of of these go unclaimed simply because students are not aware of their existence. There isn't any point participating in a rat race for known scholarships when you can easily be eligible for unusual scholarships because of your not-so-usual abilities.
College education, without doubt, is costly. A full time degree program at a typical college costs approximately 10,000 to 20,000 per year, and that doesn’t even include things like personal expenses. You'll find federal scholarships such as the Pell grant for young students who are financially handicapped. But individuals from average income families only have a few choices besides applying for a student loan. This is where unusual scholarships could be a real blessing.
There are diverse categories of unusual scholarships and a few seem to be as peculiar as their sponsors. Typically, scholarships were granted only on the basis of merit, later on scholarships were awarded to those with limited financial means to ensure they aren't denied quality education. Now there are scholarships for everything under the sun. These unusual scholarships are not like full time scholarships that cover your entire tuition fee. They're a lot more like one time prizes and therefore are useful for covering personal expenses.
Many of these unusual scholarships are sponsored by private individuals, businesses, and trusts. The funds on offer is generally a few thousand dollars, within the range of 1000 to 8000 dollars on average. Since most college students are unaware of these scholarships, there isn't much competition hence they're easy to get. There are several dedicated websites that collect and maintain lists of unusual scholarships available at different colleges.
You can look for these kinds of scholarships online. A web search for odd and unusual scholarships is bound to return a huge number of results. Filtering the results according to geographic location, college, value etc. will help you narrow down your choice. The student aid office at your institute may also have relevant information regarding scholarships on offer at your campus, don’t forget to check with them.
Obama Against the Nihilists (New Yorker)
It was a clever speech, a reminder of two things that had gone understandably
forgotten through President Obama's awful summer: he's capable of passionate
feeling, and he can also be politically dextrous. The feeling was indignation
on behalf of the country's unemployed, underemployed, foreclosed, stretched to
the limit. Not sympathy or feeling their pain--Obama doesn't do that well and
didn't try last night, because it's really beside the point. As Mark Schmitt
points out in the _New Republic_, polls show that "people no longer care that
he cares. They're fed up with gestures, empathy, or good ideas that get
blocked in the political process--all they want is results." No, what the
President expressed was a fairly unquiet anger at Washington's--meaning
Congress'--failure to act on those Americans' behalf.
That was also the politically dextrous move. Having spent the summer futilely
negotiating on the Republicans' terms, he's now calling them out to negotiate
on his, trying to turn disastrous economic circumstances to his advantage by
presenting the choice before the country in a simple way: do something or do
nothing. He didn't waste much time arguing against the Republican idea of
solving all problems by cutting taxes and ...
