Changing Your Own Oil Tips
Do you change the oil in your car? Maybe someone else does. If someone else changes your oil, make sure that they are competent. Many people have problems finding competent people to change their oil. Often times, they may forget to replace your oil cap. Are you sure that they are adding the right grade and type of oil? Lots of oil change businesses have a high personnel turnover. There may be an inexperienced person changing your oil. You can have many good reasons for changing your car's oil. Here are some tips that you may find helpful.
Cost
Do you take your car to the dealer for your oil changes? Do they do a good job? You may not need to change your own oil. You may however, wish to compare the costs. Check out the price of oil and filters.
Check prices at your local auto parts store. They are more likely to have items like that on sale. Look into a department store, too. It may be cheaper there. You might be able to save money with your own oil changes. The amount may not buy a new countertop microwave. However, you can still show a savings.
Oil types
Do you know which kind of oil your car needs? Is there a difference between synthetic oil and other types? Do you know how to open the hood of your auto? Did you answer these questions with no? You may be better off not changing your own oil. Someone else should do it for you.
You can better serve humanity with a Tiger rice cooker. This will give your family a good meal tonight. Car maintenance is not for everyone.
Other parts
Make sure you get the proper oil and filter for your car. Check the owner's manual to be certain. If it calls for synthetic, use synthetic. Some vehicle manufacturers recommend only their oil filters. It may be a good idea to follow that instruction. Some cars do not lubricate as well with aftermarket oil filters.
Be careful with your oil drain plug. Always replace the gasket after every removal. If you can, buy a new drain plug every time you change the oil. You can buy them at your local auto dealer. They are not expensive.
Final thoughts
You may be able to change your own oil. Make sure and use the right oil and filter. Change the drain plug each time. In a year's time, you may save enough money to buy yourself a handheld vacuum or maybe a toaster.
when doing an oil change can the oil filter be changed first before draining the oil?
Can the oil filter be changed before draining the oil through the oil plug? Does the order matter? Or is this going to cause all the oil in the car to go through the oil filter? I wouldn't want that to happen.
What if the oil filter was mounted on the side? Will all of the oil still come out?
Some of these answers are scaring me a little bit. The order does not make a difference at all. The only oil that will come out by the filter, which is a good thing, is the dirty oil held up by the anti drain-back valve if it is working properly. Most, if not all, of the remaining oil will be in the oil pan. It doesn't matter where or how the oil filter is mounted. the only oil that will come out is the oil I mentioned above regardless of whether you drain the pan or not.
You will still need to drain/evacuate the oil from the pan, but the order does not make any difference if you are performing an oil change.
On most European cars (Mercedes, BMW, etc) you have to take the filter element out first because there is about a 1/2 a quart of oil sitting inside the housing that will drain down to the pan when you change it.

U.K. inflation and the limits of austerity (Money)
Think you've got stagflation? Check out the U.K.
Inflation hit 4.5% in April, the government said Tuesday, up from 4% in March.
Year-over-year price increases are on their way to 5% this summer, according
to official forecasts.
Another unfriendly trend
Yet there is no rush at the Bank of England to raise interest rates, with the
economy spinning its wheels. The U.K. economy contracted in the fourth quarter
and barely expanded in MORE
