Different Types Of Heating Systems And Why You Want An Infrared Heater
I’m a Baby Boomer born in 1949. I have a life time of experience and memories of heating rooms and homes. Over the years we had all kinds of furnaces and heaters using a variety of fuels.
I can just barely remember the coal truck coming to dump a load into the basement, which of course was a whole lot more work than the best infrared heaters of today.. Later we lived in a house whose coal furnace had been converted to burn heating oil. It seemed a gigantic monster with huge duck work arms.
One place we lived had steam heat and radiators that would hiss with steam and clunk with trapped air. They were hot to touch and took a long time to warm up a room. Yet the room stayed warm once it did heat up. Forced air was quicker to warm, but the rooms got cold just as fast between cycles of heat. For a few years, here and there we lived in homes that had electric powered radiant heat. There was little mess. However, it was relatively expensive.
Later I was living in an old New England house. We had an ancient Franklin Wood Stove in our home office. This was definitely not a Lifesmart Infraed heater! It generated heat for that one room as long as the fire was burning steadily. However, there was all the work of getting the wood and cleaning out the ashes. Some of our friends had air tight wood stoves that were much more efficient.
During all this time we supplemented our home systems with space heaters for individual rooms. The one I appreciated the most kept our bathroom warm. It was low and long and had a habit of tipping over. However, it kept that room nice and cozy on cold winter mornings.
Later a safer form of space heater was invented. It looked like a small independent radiator. It was filled with some kind of oil. The oil was heated with electricity and then the radiator warmed the room with radiant heat.
In the 1980 the electric quartz heater appeared. It had a unique concept. It is designed to heat just one person. It doesn’t heat the room or the air. It heats you. Which is fine if you are sitting still in a chair; however, it only heats the part of you it faces. If you are standing your back will be cold.
We never owned one, but another type of space heater is the open flame Kerosene variety. They can put out a lot of heat. However, they can also be very dangerous.
The newest technology of space heaters is known as infrared such as the Dr. Heater. They also use quartz in their process. However, they are designed to heat large spaces while staying surprisingly cool themselves. They have the added benefit of improving air quality at the same time. So check out an infrared heater for your home.
