Using Electronic Cigarettes Over Conventional Cigarettes

An electronic cigarette is a device that vaporizes a liquid made up of water, propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin and nicotine. The process used is similar to the technology engineered into humidifiers that sprays vaporized water into the air. The electronic cigarette--known as an ecigarette--uses a device called an atomizer to heat and vaporize the liquid into a thick, white cloud, much like the smoke generated from a traditional cigarette. The difference is, this smoke-like vapor is much cleaner and void of the numerous carcinogens commonly found in cigarette smoke. Smokers enjoy the throat hit this vapor provides, which is similar to the ingestion of traditional cigarette smoke into the lungs.

E-cigarette atomizers are the heart of all electronic cigarettes. They sit between two other components. Those other two components are the battery and the cartridge. The battery is pretty much a long device that mimics the barrel of a cigarette, that is why many manufacturers make them look like actual cigarettes. The starter kits come with a battery charger that is used to charge the battery. At the end of the battery, the user will find an LED light that lights up when the user takes a drag. The cartridge is where the juice is inserted. The juice is the liquid the atomizer vaporizes. E-juice usually contains nicotine, although some manufacturers eliminate the nicotine for users who want to quit nicotine, yet still enjoy the smoking experience. For those who enjoy the nicotine, e-liquid comes in varying strengths of nicotine levels. Some users use these varying nicotine liquids as a means of weaning off of nicotine altogether.

Cartridges are manufactured in different style for holding the e-juice. The original style uses a cotton pad-like filter that is inserted into the cartridge and the e-liquid is dripped onto this pad. However, this style requires that the cartridge keeps getting refilled in order to keep the smoking experience active. The newer cartridges have a vial in the cartridge that holds a small cache of liquid. This liquid is discharged in small amounts during use and requires much less refilling.

Common problems with e-cigarettes that manufacturers are addressing are clogged atomizers, frequent cartridge replacements, routine recharging and failed batteries. Atomizers often clog with juice that has thickened and restricts the flow of air and the production of vapor. If this was to happen then the atomizer would need to be cleaned or replaced. Cartridge filters wear out over time, due to constantly holding and releasing juice. Batteries will also wear out over time and will need to be replaced.

These devices have not been approved by the FDA yet, meaning that manufacturers cannot advertise them as a viable way to stop smoking. Do you think they are the correct alternative to smoking?
